Homemade Dulce de Leche
Dulce de Leche is a sweet, thick, creamy, caramel-like sauce that is super easy to make in your slow cooker!
Prime baking season has officially begun. I’m already up to my eyeballs planning, organizing, shopping, baking and freezing. As hectic as this time of year might be, I truly do love it. All the amazing smells from the kitchen…there’s nothing like it. Every year I have my list of favorites that my kids can’t live without (and neither can I, if I’m being honest), and the things I want to try.
One of the things I like to have on hand every year is dulce de leche. It’s so versatile…you can mix it with whipped cream or buttercream, put it between shortbread cookies for cookie sandwiches, mix it into your coffee or use it for an apple dip (my personal favorite, since I try to be quasi-healthy this time of year).
Making it in the crock pot requires almost no effort. I promise, you’ll enjoy this all season long!
Dulce de Leche
Equipment
- Crock pot
Ingredients
- 1 14 oz. can sweetend, condensed milk (can be doubled or tripled, depending on the size of your crock pot)
Instructions
- Remove the label from the can and clean off as much of the glue as possible. (This is optional, but the glue can leave behind a sticky residue on the inside of your crock pot. Use some goo gone if you’ve got it.)
- Lay the can on its side in the bowl of your crock pot. Fill the crock pot with water until it covers the can by two inches.
- Set your crock pot to low and cook for 8-10 hours (the longer it cooks, the darker the dulce de leche will be).
- Remove can of milk and let cool for about an hour before opening, or until it reaches room temperature.
- Refrigerate after opening. Dulce de leche will keep for about three weeks in the fridge.
