Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a super-quick, easy throwback meal that your whole family will love!

Sloppy Joes take me back to my childhood. I grew up in the 70’s when it seemed like food was, well, no so great-ish. There were a lot of things like Hamburger Helper (which we actually never had because my mom thought it was a waste of money), franks and beans, salisbury steak, jello salads, Cheez Whiz, and pineapple on seemingly everything. And I love pineapple, but it doesn’t need to belong on all the foods. There were (and still are) special rules about adding pineapple to the aforementioned jello salads. But I digress.

Growing up in the 70’s was actually pretty awesome, despite the weird food (that I truthfully still crave sometimes). I pretty much cemented my old lady status with my kids the first time I explained how much simpler things were back then. How nice it was to end a conversation with someone, hang up the phone and (gasp!) go on about your day and do something else instead of waiting for their next text. How nice it was to just go outside and play with whoever happened to be around at the time. The feeling you used to get when a “special” was coming on tv and you had to wait to watch it, and you had to squeeze the bathrooms and snack runs into the commercial breaks. There was School House Rock and the Super Friends and the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Hour on Saturday mornings. There was Star Wars before it was anything other than just Star Wars, and that kicked ass. I know, literally every generation has uttered the phrase “life was simpler back then,” and odds are my kids will say that someday, too. But it was…simpler. And I miss that.

My mom made these on an almost weekly basis.

Sloppy Joes

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Course Main Course
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, brown meat until no longer pink.  Add in onion and cook over medium until onion is soft, about five minutes.  Add in flour and cook for one minute.  Add in remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. I serve these on very un-70’s pretzel buns or brioche buns.
