Small Batch Brownies

Published by The Flour Girl on

Small batch brownies are a perfect treat for those who want to satisfy their chocolate cravings without making a whole pan.

I’ve said it before, but I think brownies are my favorite all-time dessert. I swear they have magical powers. There are times when having a really crappy day can somewhat be eased by having a good, gooey, warm brownie.

Brownies to me have two major requirements – they have to be fudgey and they have to have the paper-thin, crinkly top. And that’s exactly what you’ll get with these brownies.

They’re made with simple ingredients – just basics like chocolate (chips will do fine if you don’t feel like chopping), brown sugar, egg, vanilla, flour, cocoa powder and salt. Plus you’ll need a loaf pan. That’s about it! Top with some vanilla ice cream and you’ll be in brownie heaven. 🙂

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces dark chocolate chopped
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cocoa powder natural or Dutch is fine
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or nuts optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and line an 8×4 loaf pan with a parchment paper sling. (If you don’t have parchment, just grease the pan really well.)
  • In a small bowl, melt the chopped chocolate and the butter together. Mix in the brown sugar, egg and vanilla.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder and salt. Pour the chocolate mixture over the top and mix until barely combined. If using, add in the chocolate chips and/or nuts and mix until just incorporated or until no streaks of flour remain.
  • Transfer mixture to loaf pan and bake at 325 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

Have you ever made these gluten free?

Hi Jessie. I’ve not tried these gluten free, but my neighbor is exclusively gluten free and I know she’s had a lot of success with using a standard one-to-one substitute with brownies since they don’t call for much flour to begin with.
